K'NEX is a construction toy invented by Joel Glickman in 1990. Before that, he was at a wedding bending and twisting straws, thinking it would be fun to play with. Although the straw idea didn't work, Joel came up with the idea to make stronger plastic rods and connectors. (And various other pieces.) The first set was released in 1993.
